Caesarean Section Epidemic: A Cause for Concern

Increased safety of caesarean section operation has led to increase in the incidence to an alarming level. Currently it is the most common surgery performed in females worldwide. It is reported to > 30 % in some of the cities in India. WHO had issued statement that 10-15 % rate of caesarean section is medically justified. Although safe, caesarean section is not as safe as vaginal delivery. The mortality and morbidity of caesarean section is quite high as compared to vaginal delivery. Caesarean sections on demand, done for convenience or for commercial reasons are unjustified. Changing the attitude of both patients as well as doctors will only help in controlling this epidemic which is highly and urgently needed.
