New Haemostatic Agentand Application Tool forNeurosurgery

There are a variety of electrical, mechanical and chemical methods used to achieve haemostasis in Neurosurgery. Generally, chemical haemostatic agents are often preferable to bipolar cautery in spinal procedures. These haemostats have been used in neurosurgical spinal procedures for more than 65 years. This paper focuses on efficacy and technical aspects of the application of biodegradable gelatin haemostatic agents Pahacel Gelatin Powder® and a new application tool. Our experience for a new haemostatic tool in spine surgery has been presented in this study. The efficacy of it was tested on the patients who underwent surgery for lumbar disc hernia, lumbar spinal stenosis and lumbar trauma. Depending on the surgery effective hemostasis was achieved between 60 to 195 seconds following the initial application without any secondary effects. Preliminary results have shown that besides its advantages Pahacel Gelatin Powder® can also be a cost effective choice for the brain surgeries. However, extensive research is necessary for statistical results.
