Dr. Chan graduated from the Hong Kong Polytechnic with a distinction in the Diploma Fashion & Clothing Manufacture course and gained the award of Associateship of the Clothing & Footwear Institute in 1982. He furthered his studies in the UK, obtaining a PhD from the University of Leeds in 1990. Dr. Chan has worked in the clothing industry in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. His teaching specialties are clothing production, technology and manufacturing. His research interests range from anthropometric studies to production management. Dr Chan is active in providing consultancy services to the industry.

Apparel designing and fitting often requires a mannequin or a dummy to fit-test if a garment is well designed and can fit properly on a human figure. However, these mannequins/dummies are until now, fixed in size and shape. A new innovative robotic mannequin, called “i.Dummy” has been designed and developed that can change its size, shape, proportion and measurements three-dimensionally. This would help the industry to reduce cost and space in having one mannequin/dummy instead of having many fixed size ones.
