Biography

"Filip Janku, MD, PhD, serves as an Associate Professor and medical oncologist in the Department of Investigational Cancer Therapeutics (Phase I Program) at MD Anderson Cancer Center. Dr. Janku obtained his MD and PhD at the Charles University Prague. Dr. Janku?s research focuses on proof-of-concept clinical trials that possess a pivotal correlative component especially those involving liquid biopsies. Dr. Janku received multiple awards for his research efforts, including Sidney Kimmel Scholar award, Khalifa Scholar Award, several ASCO Merit Awards as well as an American Association for Cancer Research Scholar-in-Training Award"

Unusual Sanctuary Site (Central Nervous System) Metastases in Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor Patients

Gastrointestinal Stromal Tumor (GIST) metastases occur in 18%47% of patients and most commonly involve the liver and peritoneum.  Central Nervous System (CNS) and other sanctuary site metastases are rare, with only limited single patient case reports available in the literature. Given the availability of multiple effective treatments and longer life expectancy in patients with metastatic GIST, there is an increased likelihood of metastases to sanctuary sites including the CNS.
