Dr. Khristen is a field epidemiologist who has worked both domestically and internationally on the social and environmental determinants of health among vulnerable populations. She is primarily interested in the nexus of gender, the environment and health. Dr. Khristen is the Associate Director for International Initiatives and leads the global health educational program within the Department of Public Health Sciences at Penn State College of Medicine.

Health economics is vital in determining the way to improve health outcomes and lifestyle patterns through interactions between individuals, healthcare providers and clinical settings. In broad terms, health economists study the functioning of healthcare systems and health-affecting behaviors like smoking, diabetes, and obesity.
