Dr. Schwarze received a Ph.D. in Molecular Biology at the University of Wisconsin. Over the next six years he furthered his education with post-doctoral training, conducting research at Washington University in St. Louis and at Wisconsin Comprehensive Cancer Center. In 2005 he became a faculty member at the University of Kentucky. After being in the research field for 20 years, Dr. Schwarze obtained training as a Medical Laboratory Scientist in 2011. Dr. Schwarze joined the Science Program at the University of Kentucky in 2013 as an Assistant Professor.

Purpose: Precision medicine of tumors is designed to tailor treatment combinations to individual patients, targeting specific genotypes with corresponding inhibitors. The purpose of this study was to determine whether genotype predicted target gene expression-a critical parameter for treatment-and to test whether alternate modes of gene amplification could affect gene expression. Patients and methods: The cohort consisted of patients in Kentucky with recurrent breast cancer who were analyzed by nextgeneration sequencing. Tumors with amplifications in CCND1, AURKA, and MYC were then stained by immunohistochemistry.
