Abstract

Waste plastic production and proper disposal have become a major concern to fastgrowing and developing countries, such as Nigeria. It has been reported that large amounts of plastic wastes produced are not the problem, but the proper disposal of these materials. Government, households/individuals, workplaces, and waste management agencies or companies share the blame on this matter. The weak waste management system is affected grossly by unenforced government legislation on waste management and environmental sustainability; unwholesome household/individual waste management practices; and unethical (open burning), technical and operational failures of the waste management agencies. Many products in the market are either produced with or packaged in plastic materials such as polypropylene (for sachet water, confectionary packs, etc); polyethylene terephthalate (for food, beverages, etc). Plastic wastes are nonbiodegradable but can be recycled or reused; and when they are not properly managed, they create environmental pollution. It is also important to ban non-recyclable or non-reusable plastics from the market in Nigeria; stop the open burning of waste plastics by waste management, and place a fine on dropping waste plastics along the road or in drainages. Waste plastics, as well as other wastes, should be sorted at source (the end user) before disposal. The local or city council (saddled with the responsibility of waste management) should provide adequate information (community forums, leaflets, etc), well-labeled waste bins, technical and operational equipment for handling these wastes. Some of these should be made available to households, workplaces, businesses/markets, religious centers and along the streets and walkways at the cost of the council tax paid by the people.
