Abstract
A greenhouse gas (GHG) is a gas in an atmosphere that absorbs and emits radiations within the thermal infrared range. This process is the fundamental cause of the greenhouse effect (IPCC AR4 SYR Appendix Glossary). This study determined the level of awareness and participation of high school teachers and students in solid waste management as a step in minimizing greenhouse gases emission particularly methane. It sought answers to the problems on significant relationship between the level of awareness of the respondents in solid waste management in terms of their age, gender, socio-economic status and educational background; significant relationship between the level of participation of the respondents in solid waste management in terms of the variables mentioned; significant relationship between the level of awareness and the level of participation of the respondents in solid waste management in terms of segregation, recycling, composting and curriculum inclusion. The findings showed that there was no significant relationship between the level of awareness of the teachersrespondents in solid waste management in terms of their age, gender, socio-economic status and educational background; there was significant relationship between the level of awareness of the student-respondents in solid waste management in terms of their age, gender, socio-economic status, except educational background; and there was no significant relationship between the level of participation of the respondents in solid waste management in terms of their age and socio-economic status but not to their gender and educational qualification.
