Pediatric vascular lesions: Is sclerotherapy the answer?

Abstract
Introduction: Vascular lesions in pediatric age group are diverse including hemangioma, vascular malformation, combined veno lymphatic malformation, etc. Objective: Surgical excision may not be feasible in all. Alternative modalities such as sclerotherapy have been proposed to tackle these lesions. We have attempted to look into the efficacy and feasibility of image guided interventional therapy in these lesions. Patients & Methods: Retrospective review from 2012-2018 to analyze the children who have had interventional sclerotherapy by image guidance. Data was captured in proforma regarding the type of lesion, sclerosant used, type of guidance, response. Results: Total of 12 patients underwent intervention, of which 7 received STD, 4 received bleomycin and 1 received coil embolization. Of these 12 patients, 3 had undergone surgical excision before. Satisfactory results (size reduction with color and consistency change) were obtained in almost all patients. Two are awaiting further sessions for size reduction. Conclusion: Image guided sclerotherapy is an efficacious modality in managing pediatric vascular lesions, including post-surgical patients.
