Female breast cancer has now surpassed lung cancer as the leading cause of global cancer incidence in 2020, with an estimated 2.3 million new cases, representing 11.7% of all cancer cases. Among women, breast cancer accounts for 1 in 4 cancer cases and for 1 in 6 cancer deaths, ranking first for incidence in the vast majority of countries Many authors have reported that elevated incidence rates are also attributed to an increased prevalence of risk factors such as early age menstruation, later age at menopause, late age at first birth, fewer children or null parity, oral contraceptives, hormone replacement therapy, alcohol intake, and unhealthy/sedentary life styles. This has led to a difference of incidence of breast cancer between the urban and rural population in India with increased incidence in the urban women. The present study is trying to work on the prognostic factors by studying 100 cases of breast malignancy over a two year period 2020 and 2021 presenting with breast lumps and clinical suspicion of breast malignancy. The prognostic factors included are Age, Size of the tumor, Bloom Richardson grade, Lymph node involved, Estrogen receptor status, Progesterone status, Human epidermal growth factor receptor-2 Status), Ki- 67 status with comparison to other studies. An attempt to find the correlation of IHC ER, PR, HER2, and KI67 with other prognostic factors is made. This is important for early treatment and prognosis.

Dr Nandini N. M, Professor, JSS Medical College, Mysore, is attached as a teaching faculty from the past 25 years in the department of pathology. She has worked in the field of cytology of cervix and breast. She has attended many national and international conferences in countries like U.K, USA, Singapore and Netherland. She has worked on liquid-based cytology, cell block technique and has come up with indegenious methods. She has severeal publications and books to her credit written on cervical and breast cancer.
