Abstract

Climate change is a fact of life. Under current projections, concentrations of greenhouse gases will continue to increase to an indefinite level, entailing a process of continued global warming. Estimates of the costs of climate change will continue to escalate varying widely across the globe, leading to unsustainable development. Developing nations are among the most vulnerable globally to the effects of climate change, because of the dependence of much of the population on agriculture, particularly rain-fed and widespread poverty that renders them unable to withstand climate stress. The effects of climate change on sustainable development is experienced and felt more intensive in most developing nations than before. The development of appropriate adaptation and mitigation, policies and strategies to manage the impact of climate change on small scales and for sustainability, is worth working. This will reduce stress and build resilience for sustainability. Building the capacity and competency of decision makers, leaders and opinion leaders to deal with issues of climate change using home grown solutions shall be very appropriate for sustainability through the combination of indigenous, traditional and scientific knowledge. It will again enhance the adaptive capacities, planning for addressing trans-boundary impacts of climate change for sustainability. Next to that, the current and future vulnerability, climate risks and socio-economic conditions will be assessed and appropriate polices designed, and adaptation options will be identified and prioritized. This will set the stage for a new set of research issues, and also propose a framework that could be used as a starting point for a broader agenda to examine the awareness about the effects and value of climate change on sustainability.
