Abstract
Background: Induced abortion is a stressful experience for both pregnant women and their families. Misperception and uncertainty regarding the legal and moral aspects of induced abortion may increase the anxiety of the patients. Providing accurate information may ameliorate this issue. We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of an animated educational video combined with traditional face-to-face counseling to reduce anxiety levels in pregnant women seeking outpatient medical abortion. Methods: This study was a randomized controlled trial. Pregnant women eligible for outpatient medical abortion were included and randomized to a video group (traditional counseling and an animated educational video) or a non video group (traditional counseling alone). Demographic characteristics, anxiety levels assessed by the Spielberger State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI), and five-point Likert-scale satisfaction levels were evaluated. Results: Sixty pregnant women were included in the analysis (30 pregnant women per group). The post-intervention STAI scores were significantly lower in the video group than in the non-video group, 32.70 ± 4.96 v 41.47 ± 8.57 (p < 0.01). The patient satisfaction levels were similarly high in both groups, 4.92 ± 0.27 v 4.85 ± 0.36 (p = 0.42). Conclusions: The implementation of an animated educational video to traditional counseling effectively reduced anxiety in pregnant women seeking outpatient medical abortion with high satisfaction toward medical service.
