Named after its inventor, Joseph Marie Jacquard, this mechanical loom introduced an automated process for patterned weaving, greatly expanding the design possibilities in the textile industry. The Jacquard loom was a breakthrough because it automated the pattern-making process. It utilized a series of punched cards, each representing a row of the design.
