Effect of Haemodialysis on Some Haematological Parameters in Patients with End-Stage Renal Failure

Abstract

Background: End stage renal disease (ESRD) is the final stage of chronic renal failure and the patients normally depend on haemodialysis for the elimination of water and metabolic wastes. The objective of the study was to assess the effect of haemodialysis on haematological parameters.
Methodology: Twenty-five patients with ESRD and 50 apparently healthy adults were recruited for the study. Haematocrit, haemoglobin concentration (Hb), red blood cell count (RBC), red cell indices, white blood cell count (WBC) and platelet count were assessed on patients, and control blood samples using automated haematology analyser.
Results: Red blood cell count, haemoglobin concentration, haematocrit, mean cell haemoglobin (MCH), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and platelet count showed significantly lower values in ESRD patients compared to controls (P?0.05) while the values of RBC count, Hb, haematocrit, mean cell volume (MCV), mean cell haemoglobin (MCH), mean cell haemoglobin concentration (MCHC) and WBC count increased significantly after haemodialysis (P?0.05)
Conclusion: ESRD is associated with anaemia and lower platelet count while haemodialysis procedure reduces the level of anaemia and increase leucocyte count. Hence, the need to encourage haemodialysis procedure among ESRD patients.
