Abstract

Use of catgut (Surgical Suture) as to stimulate the acupuncture points was introduced by Prof. Sir Dr. P. B. Lohiya for the first time in 1985. This paper deals with the comparative study of Combination of Catgut embedding & Electro-Acupuncture with that of only Electro-Acupuncture in variety of disorders. Cases were divided in to 3 groups. Group A-Only Electro-Acupuncture-20 sittings of 20 minutes each given once a day followed by a gap of 10 days. Cases of local region who can attend frequently for treatment were selected for this group. Group B- Combination of CE & EA- Catgut embedding at 4 points and 2 sittings of Electro- Acupuncture, once in 15 days. Cases coming for remote area who can’t come daily were selected for this method. Group C- Combination of CE & EA- Catgut embedding at 4 points once a month and 20 sittings of 20 minutes each given once a day followed by a gap of 10 days prior to the next course. Relatively severe cases not responding satisfactorily to Electro-Acupuncture alone were selected for this group. Results were tabulated after three months. Response was classified as – Poor, Good & Excellent. Effective rate was taken as Good + Excellent. First 200 Cases of each group who were coming regularly for 3 months between 1/6/2017 & 31/5/2018 were only selected for this study. Fall outs were replaced. The effective rate was in the groups were Group A 84 %, Group B 81% and group C 96%. Results were considerably better in Group C. Not only that, in Group C Excellent results were obtained in 54% in comparison to Group A 29 % and Group B 28%. Results of Groups A & B were almost similar. Success rate was 3 % better in group A as compared to Group B. A regimen of 20 sittings of Electro-Acupuncture and once Catgut Embedding every month showed excellent results overall particularly in supposedly incurable disorders like Optic Atrophy, MND, Myopathy, Coronary Heart disease etc. Considering the limitations of Modern Medicine in treating Chronic disorders, Acupuncture combined with Catgut Embedding seems to work very well.
