Endoscopic LASER treatment for ureteric stones

Abstract


Ureteric stones is a common health problem facing urologist worldwide and with advance of endoscopy and LASER, many of these patients were underwent ureteroscopy for stone destruction, the aim of the study to assess the validity of laser in treatment of different ureteric stones according to site, size and the time between stone diagnosis and surgical intervention with rate of complications. The study was included 50 patients had ureteric stones underwent endoscopic LASER stone treatment in Hilla teaching hospital in Babylon/Iraq, in period between November 2016 till October 2017, stone size between 7mm- 16mm, the gender of the patients were 30 males and 20 females, the site of the stone were 21 stones in the right ureter and 29 stones in the left ureter, 5 stones in the upper ureter, 10 stones in the mid ureter and 35 stones in the lower ureter. The time between the initial diagnosis till intervention was one week to six months The Result was stone free in 48 (96%) patients after period of follow up between 6 weeks to 12 weeks, complications were 6(12%) patients had hematuria, 5(10%) patients had UTI, bacteremia in 2 (4%) patients and 3(6%) patients had minor ureteric injury treated by JJ stent. In conclusion, endoscopic LASER treatment is safe and has a good result for stone treatment in the hand of an expert urologist.

Biography


Ammad Mahmood is a consultant urologist interested in the field of stone surgery and onco-urology as he had many published paper especially endoscopic treatment of cancer of the bladder, he is a chief of postgraduate study in urology in Babylon for Iraqi BOARD study in urology as part of Iraqi BOARD for medical specialization for postgraduate training students in urology. He was an active member of (EAU) European association of urology since 2012 till now and participate in many conferences held in different European countries. He has interest in academic work as part of his title professor of urology and worked with his colleague in the related topic to basic sciences such as biochemistry, microbiology, and physiology and shared with them much postgraduate supervision in these fields and published many papers. He had more than 25 papers published in many journals inside and outside Iraq, he was secretory editor of Babylon medical journal for last 5 years till now.
