Abstract

With the advent of modern technology and latest development in science, the concept of using biomarkers in medical domain is considerably expanding. Biomarkers may be defined as the biological molecules which effectively check the physiological and pathological processes and at the same time access the therapeutic effect of new molecule (medicine). Safety, efficacy and consistency are some of the features to be kept into contemplation for considering biomarker as an ideal one. The increased prevalence of life threatening disorders viz. diabetes, cancer and cardiovascular risk has further imposed responsibility on shoulders of biomedical scientists to explore new biomarkers. Apart from this, the concept of use of biomarkers in translational research offers an attractive approach in lieu of medications that need to be adhered for life-long term. Biomarkers help in screening of the disease from the very beginning till the end stage detrimental effects. Biomarkers also offer the advantage of disease assessment at genetic, messenger RNA and metabolic level. The biomarkers are of utmost importance in drug development process as they help to reduce high failure rates and huge economical loss to the pharmaceutical companies via early screening of new chemical entities. Thus, the imperative role of biomarkers cannot be ignored as it is high time to discover new generation of biomarkers for the advancement of mankind. Furthermore, the collaborative research and development of new scientific technologies can also help to increase the widespread acceptance of these biomarkers.
