Investigating the Relationship Between Vitamin D Deficiency and Chronic Periodontitis Severity

Abstract


Vitamin D is known for its immunomodulatory and bone metabolism roles, but its association with periodontal disease is not fully established. This cross-sectional study analyzed serum vitamin D levels in 120 patients with varying chronic periodontitis severity. Serum 25(OH)D concentrations were measured, and clinical periodontal parameters including probing depth, attachment loss, and bleeding on probing were recorded. Patients with severe periodontitis showed significantly lower vitamin D levels (mean 15 ng/mL) compared to mild cases (mean 27 ng/mL) and controls (mean 32 ng/ mL). These findings suggest that vitamin D deficiency may exacerbate periodontal tissue destruction. Vitamin D supplementation could be considered an adjunctive strategy in managing periodontitis, though further longitudinal studies are needed.
