Abstract
Patients with diabetes are at increased risk for periodontal disease, partly due to suboptimal oral hygiene behaviors. Motivational interviewing (MI), a patient-centered counseling technique, has shown promise in improving health behaviors. This randomized trial investigated the impact of MI on oral hygiene and periodontal outcomes in 80 adults with type 2 diabetes. Participants were assigned to receive either standard oral hygiene instructions or MI sessions over 3 months. Plaque index, gingival index, and HbA1c levels were assessed at baseline and follow-up. The MI group demonstrated significantly greater improvements in plaque control and gingival health, alongside modest reductions in HbA1c. MI is an effective tool to enhance oral hygiene adherence in diabetic patients, potentially reducing periodontal complications and improving systemic health.
