Abstract

The COVID-19 pandemic imposed unprecedented challenges on delivering routine dental care due to infection risk and lockdowns. Tele-dentistry, utilizing remote consultations and digital platforms, emerged as a vital tool to maintain access and triage urgent cases. This mixed-methods study assessed tele-dentistry usage across 10 urban clinics over 12 months. Quantitative data showed a 45% reduction in in-person visits during lockdown peaks, with tele dentistry compensating for 60% of consultations. Patient satisfaction surveys revealed high acceptance, particularly for preventive advice and follow-up care. Qualitative interviews with practitioners highlighted challenges including technology barriers and limitations in performing physical examinations. Despite limitations, tele-dentistry proved effective in maintaining continuity of care, reducing unnecessary emergency visits, and educating patients remotely. The study recommends integrating tele-dentistry into routine practice beyond the pandemic to improve oral health equity.
