These critical components include the gums (gingiva), the periodontal ligament, and the alveolar bone. Together, they form the periodontium, a complex and dynamic system that ensures our teeth remain securely anchored in our jaws. Understanding these structures is vital for maintaining oral health and addressing various dental issues effectively.

The gums are the soft tissue that surrounds the teeth and covers the alveolar bone. They play several essential roles. The gums protect the underlying bone and the roots of the teeth from bacterial infection and mechanical damage. They act as a barrier to food particles and bacteria, preventing them from entering the periodontal pockets. Healthy gums contribute to an attractive smile, while inflamed or receding gums can lead to aesthetic and functional problems.

Gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums, is often the first stage of periodontal disease. If left untreated, it can progress to more severe forms of periodontal disease, potentially leading to tooth loss. Regular dental checkups and cleanings help in early detection and management of potential issues. A balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals, avoiding tobacco, and managing systemic conditions like diabetes are important for periodontal health.
