Biosafety framework for genetically modified organisms in Brazil

Abstract
Since 2005 Brazil has a solid science-based regulatory framework for genetically modified organisms. CTNBio is a multidisciplinary collegiate body, created through Law No. 11,105 of March 24, 2005, whose purpose is to provide technical advisory support and advice to the Federal Government in the formulation, updating and implementation of the National Biosafety Policy on GMOs such as establishing technical safety standards and technical advice on the protection of human health, living organisms and the environment for activities involving the construction, testing, cultivation, handling, transport, marketing, consumption, storage, release and disposal of GMOs and derivatives. Among the innovations established in the Brazilian law, the inclusion of synthetic nucleic acids as passive of use in genetic engineering stands out, being therefore considered GMOs those organisms that underwent transformation with this material. This legal positioning anticipated international scenarios that currently discuss possible implications of the synthetic biology technique. The Brazilian legal instruments have allowed the safe use of genetically modified plants, vaccines and microorganisms and will undoubtedly apply to organisms coming from synthetic biology, since the risk assessment premises are perfectly applicable to them. The situation in other countries of LAM will also be presented.
Biography
A Lerayer is an Agronomist having completed his PhD in Genetics of Plants and Microorganisms at ESALQ/USP, Brazil, and Post-Doctorat and INRA, Institut National de la Recherche Agronomique France. She was Research at Institute of Food Technology, Professor at Catholic University of Campinas, UNICAMP - University of Campinas and ESALQ/ USP, former Executive Director of CIB - Council for Biotechnology Information and consultant for UNIDO on Lactic Fermentations, having many published papers and books chapters.
