Illinois Institute of Technology

Illinois Institute of Technology, commonly called IIT, is a private Ph.D. granting Research University located in Chicago, in the state of Illinois, with programs in science, engineering, architecture, psychology, business, communications, industrial technology, information technology, design and law. Illinois Tech (IIT) was created in 1940 by the merger of Armour Institute and Lewis Institute. Armour Institute opened in 1893 by Philip Danforth Armour. While Lewis Institute established in 1895 by the estate of hardware merchant and investor Allen C. Lewis, offered liberal arts as well as science and engineering courses for both men and women. IIT is divided into five colleges (Armour College of Engineering, College of Science, Lewis College of Human Sciences, Chicago-Kent College of Law, College of Architecture), an institute (Institute of Design), two schools (Stuart School of Business, School of Applied Technology), and a number of research centres, some of which provide academic programs independent of the other academic units. While many maintain undergraduate programs, some only offer graduate or certificate programs. The Institute for Food Safety and Health (IFSH) is a world-renowned food science research institute focusing on food safety, food defence, and nutrition for stakeholders in industry, academia and government. Wanger Institute for Sustainable Energy Research (WISER) is an umbrella organization that joins energy and sustainability research with educational activities across the colleges and institutes at Illinois Tech. Pritzker Institute of Biomedical Science and Engineering is an umbrella organization that enhances the biomedical science and engineering research activities at Illinois Tech. At Illinois Tech research is the hallmark of our culture of excellence. The faculty, students, and staff are leading bold research and discovery in fields where technology and innovation are creating significant, meaningful change. Throughout our colleges and research centres, and in topics as varied as energy, theoretical physics, and social justice, our research reflects our commitment to scientific, technological, and professional knowledge creation and innovation. IIT was featured on Princeton Review's 2014 list of 378 best colleges in the United States and on its list of Best Midwest Colleges. IIT was ranked as a tier one university being the 108th best university nationally. It was featured as 24 on Newsweek's College Rankings 2012: Most Rigorous Schools list. IIT was ranked the 72nd best graduate school for engineering in United State News & World Report's "Best Graduate Schools 2014." IIT-Kent was ranked as a tier one law school being the 68th best law school nationally based on U.S. News & World Report". According to the United State News & World Report, IIT's Aerospace Engineering was ranked 21, Materials Engineering was ranked 59, Chemical Engineering was ranked 60 and Biomedical Engineering was ranked 61. Payscale ranked IIT 5 among Midwestern universities for the salary potential of its graduates who earn a bachelor's degree. IIT Institute of Design has achieved worldwide recognition as one of the world's top design schools. IIT was designated in 2015 as a National Centre of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the National Security Agency, acknowledging the substantial focus on cyber security and digital forensics in formal degrees, certificates, and specializations in programs offered by the School of Applied Technology.
