The University of California, Davis, is a public teaching and research university located in Davis, California, just west of Sacramento. The campus covers 7,309 acres (2,958 ha), making it the largest within the 10 campus University of California system. UC Davis also has the third largest enrollment in the UC System after UCLA and UC Berkeley. In 2013, U.S. News and World Report ranked UC Davis as the 9th best public university in the United States, 39th nationally, and tied for 3rd best of the UC schools with UC San Diego, following UC Berkeley and UCLA. UC Davis is also one of 62 members in the Association of American Universities.
The Carnegie Foundation classifies UC Davis as a comprehensive doctoral research university with a medical program, and very high research activity. UC Davis faculty includes 21 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 21 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, 17 members of the American Law Institute, 12 members of the Institute of Medicine, and 13 members of the National Academy of Engineering.
While UC Davis' agricultural heritage remains strong, the campus has expanded over the past century to include graduate and professional programs in medicine (which includes the UC Davis Medical Center), law, veterinary medicine, education, nursing, and business management, in addition to 90 research programs offered by UC Davis Graduate Studies. UC Davis' School of Veterinary Medicine is the largest in the United States and is ranked second in the nation.
