Biography

Dr. Buell is the Director of the Tulane Transplant Institute and Director of Transplantation at the New Orleans Children’s Hospital, the Louisiana State University. Currently, Dr. Buell is a tenured Professor of Surgery and Pediatrics at Tulane University and the Louisiana State University. Dr. Buell has clinical interests are in hepatobiliary surgery, medical device and pharmacologic development including tissue platforms and stem cell technology. His medical interests are in health care disparity, medical economics, medical systems development and health policy. Dr. Buell’s expertise is in liver and bile duct surgery, as well as solid organ and composite tissue transplantation. Dr. Buell received his undergraduate from Fordham University in New York City and subsequently earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester, and a Masters of Business Administration from Tulane University. Dr. Buell completed his general surgery residency at the University of Maryland and Shock Trauma Center. Dr. Buell subsequently completed two fellowships, the first in surgical oncology at the National Cancer Center, National Institutes of Health and the second his multi-organ transplant fellowship at the University of Chicago. Dr. Buell has received numerous awards and fellowships including The Dr. Leak award from the American Cancer Society. Dr. Buell was trained as a basic scientist at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health and completed his post-doctoral research in the molecular mechanisms of DNA platination and the implications of hyperthermia and tumor necrosis factor in the modification of snip gene transcription. Dr. Buell has been continuously funded through multiple society as well as the NIH, NOR, and AHA. Dr. Buell subsequently pioneered the field of laparoscopic liver surgery has become a thought leader in device development, clinical trials and translational research. Since his arrival in New Orleans he has re-organized and realigned the Tulane and Louisiana State University programs to provide comprehensive transplant and liver tumor care for adults and children in the greater Louisiana region. In this region with significant financial and racial disparity, Dr. Buell and his collaborator Dr. Friedlander have worked with the ministers of the Ninth Ward to address systemic and regional racial disparity to provide improved healthcare while minimizing healthcare costs in to the most financially disparate populations.
