Biography

Dr. Philip Corvo has served as Chairman of the Stanley J. Dudrick Department Surgery and Director of Surgical Critical Care at Saint Mary’s Hospital since 2013. Dr. Corvo graduated from Brooklyn College where he obtained a combined, accelerated Bachelor’s and Master’s degree in BioPsychology. He received his medical degree from the University of Connecticut School of Medicine and completed his surgical residency at Stamford Hospital, a member of the New York Presbyterian Healthcare System and a major teaching affiliate of Columbia University. He then went on to complete a Critical Care fellowship at Hartford Hospital. Dr. Corvo is board certified in Surgery and Critical Care Medicine. An accomplished general and laparoscopic surgeon, he is certified in robotic-assisted surgery. He is a proctor for Intuitive, the maker of the da Vinci Surgical Robot. He was the first surgeon in New England to perform a single-incision robotic cholecystectomy (removal of the gallbladder through only the belly-button), has the largest single-surgeon series of robotic cholecystectomies in the world literature, and developed a laser sighting and positioning device for robotic surgery. Dr. Corvo is a past president of the Connecticut Chapter of the American College of Surgeons, and a co-founder of the CT Surgical Quality Collaborative
