Biography

Alexandra Kautzky-Willer is head of the Gender Medicine Unit, head of the university course gender medicine and deputy head of the Department of Internal Medicine III of the Medical University of Vienna. She has specialized in Internal Medicine and in Endocrinology and Metabolism. She is board member of numerous medical and scientific associations – among these the Austrian diabetes association, the Austrian obesity association, the International Society for Gender Medicine and the Gender Studies Association Austria. She is president of the Austrian Society of Gender-Specific Medicine, editorial board member of various journals and scientific consultant of national and international medical-scientific funds. In 2011 she was nominated in the category research at the 2011 “Österreicher des Jahres” Awards. In 2013 the European Institute for Gender Equality elected her as one of the Women Inspiring Europe 2013. Alexandra Kautzky-Willer is author and co-author of numerous articles, reviews, editorials, book chapters and books. Her research interests are gender aspects of fetal programming, overweight and obesity, metabolic diseases in general and diabetes mellitus in particular, inflammation, adipokines and endothelial dysfunction.
