Biography

William F. Brechue is a Professor and Chairman, Department of Physiology at Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine. He was a Professor of Physical Education at the United States Military Academy at West Point NY. In this role he serves as the Director of the Center for Physical Development Excellence (the department’s research center) and program director of the Kinesiology Bachelor’s Degree program. Previous academic appointments include the Department of Kinesiology and Health Studies at the University of Central Oklahoma (2006), the Department of Kinesiology at Indiana University (1995-2002) and at the University of Florida College of Medicine in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics (1987-1993) and Department of Medicine (1993-1995).

Research Interest

Dr. Brechue’s research is based in organ-systems physiology. Early research focused on the enzyme carbonic anhydrase and ocular and renal physiology and pharmacology. The former included drug development work towards the treatment of glaucoma. Continued work has focused primarily neuromuscular and cardiovascular physiology and metabolic regulation specifically applied to physiological factors that dictate athletic performance and response to training and exercise prescription for health, rehabilitation and prevention of disease in elderly and end-stage organ disease.
