Biography

Dr. Jess Power joined the University of Huddersfield in April 2012 as Director of Teaching and Learning for the School of Art, Design and Architecture. In this role Jess takes a strategic role leading teaching and learning across the schools three departments. This involves bringing together multi-disciplinary opportunities within teaching and learning and creating a synergy with research and enterprise activities and ensuring quality assurance of all provision. In this post Jess is keen to promote innovations within teaching, learning and enterprise including the use of the virtual learning environment. Dr. Jess also has a number of university wide roles representing the school of Art, Design and Architecture. In 1996 Dr. Jess graduated from De Montfort University with a BSc in Knitwear Design and Production. This led to employment within the apparel industry (1996-2000) as a design interpreter for Jaeger Knitwear. In 1999 Jess returned part-time to academia and was awarded a MA from Nottingham Trent University. Shortly afterwards Dr. Jess joined a DTI funded project at UMIST which focused on developing advanced technical materials. This led to her obtaining a PhD in technical textiles in 2004. From 2003-2012 Jess was employed as a senior lecturer at Manchester Metropolitan University taking a variety of leadership roles including Course Leader, Department Research Degree Coordinator, Vice Chair of the Faculty Ethics Committee and more recently Faculty Research Degrees Chair. During her career she has been involved in, and managed a variety of research projects in textile and clothing related areas. Dr. Jess has been a member of the Textile Institute since 1995, an active member of the Manchester and Cheshire section since 2004, was awarded her FTI at the centenary conference in 2010 and has served as a Trustee of the Textile Institute since 2011. She is also a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
